Study at the university of Vienna

Since I continued university in winter 2006 my progress there is quite well. I am now in the 3rd semester and make toughts about switching to the new curriculum. Until now you got a diploma when finished. Now the study is broken up into two parts. You start by making a bachelor and then have the opportunity to make your mastser degree. Probably I will take the possibility of this new form and make a biology bachelor degree. And by what time brings decide which study to finish to probably get my masters degree.

It would also be an option to request an individual study-plan. Particularly I am not a friend of the methods which get used in university genetic laboratories. I could not take a look at those personally but have been told that there are mostly no security measures taken to avoid problems.

In my opinion there should be a long time of something like "theoretical genetics" before we humans try to put our hands on modifying living organisms. Altough mankind is raising cattle, dogs or cats since quite some epochs it is another far more "aggresive" approach to modify the genetical information found in each living cell.  So I am not completly against study nature, genetics and biochemistry or cell biology. But it should really be taken care before organisms - which are capable of reproduction get modified and put into nature. I do not know what the correct way would be. Even if software capabel of simulating most of environment and nature would get created it could not forsee any unexpected things happen.

Sometimes when I think about cells, or even atoms, especially nuclear energy. The ballad of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe "Der Zauberlehrling" ("The sorcerers apprentice") comes into my mind. In this lyric a sorcerers apprentice tries to do magic by himself as his master is gone and he he believes he can do the same. He entwitches a broom which then starts to operate and transport water. But he can't stop it anymore and the broom starts to split and gets out of control. Some years ago I even began to make an "alternate" version which directly takes aspect on molecular biology. I do not want to offend the work of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in any way. Please take in conclusion that I also have to work a lot an by thus can not invest my full time into study - else I could have finished quite some more courses.

I've uploaded a new *annual university report for summer semester 2008*. Altough I got also some bad marks durings the last two semesters, study did quite some progress. But good things take a while.
